moonlight tower run

This morning, starting at 5:30 a.m. Gordon, Amy, and I embarked upon what we came to joke about being our "Moonlight Tower" run through Austin to log 14 miles in the books.
Austin has these very cool things called Moonlight Towers. There are currently 17 in use in Austin. We didn't hit quite all 17 of them on our run but we definitely enjoyed the light of many of them that are west of I-35.
Apparently in the late 1800s, this type of lighting was fairly common across the United States as a way to light public spaces. Today, only Austin is the only city in the U.S. where they are still used...pretty neat! Some details: they are 150 feet tall and shed light (enough to read by) for a 1,500 foot radius. I'll vouch for that. Well, not the reading part, but how much area they light up. They helped us a lot on some neighborhood streets in the pre-dawn hours today! Just one more reason why Austin is so cool...
Glad to start my day with this run with Gordon and Amy...to continue it with time with friends...to wind it down with some work (with my windows open b/c it's finally a bearable temperature here in Austin!), laundry, cooking (finally! a big ole pan of roasted veggies and salmon...food for the week!), and some reading. A pretty wonderful Sunday...
